IMSS confirms bacteria in four newborns deceased in Durango hospital

The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) has confirmed that four of the five newborns who died in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Hospital General de Zona No. 1 in Durango tested positive for a bacteria. The microorganism has been identified as Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Between September 1 and September 19, the NICU treated 11 newborns in critical condition. Six of these infants were successfully discharged and are currently at home; none of them tested positive for the bacteria. The five deaths occurred between September 15 and September 19.

Health authorities, including the Ministry of Health and Cofepris, are conducting a joint clinical and epidemiological investigation to determine if there is a direct causal link between the bacteria and the deaths. While the bacteria was found in the deceased infants, it has not been detected in any other area of the hospital. The IMSS has also ruled out contamination of medicines or cleaning supplies as the cause of the outbreak.
