IMSS Director Zoé Robledo apologizes to families of five deceased infants in Durango
Zoé Robledo, the director general of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), met with the families of five newborns who died in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (UCIN) of the Hospital General de Zona No. 1 in Durango. During a private meeting, Robledo offered personal apologies to the parents, marking the first time an official has done so.
The deaths are linked to a bacterial outbreak, with four of the five infants testing positive for Klebsiella pneumoniae. However, the families, represented by lawyer Fermín Alonso Flores Ayala, argue that the issue extends beyond the bacteria to include hospital omissions and poor treatment. They have filed four criminal complaints with the Federal Attorney General's Office (FGR), with a fifth expected soon, citing concerns over the lack of autopsies and failure to report the deaths to federal authorities.
In response, the IMSS has committed to an internal investigation conducted by personnel independent of the local Durango delegation. The institute also pledged to provide comprehensive support to the families, including medical, psychological, and tanatological care, as well as coverage for funeral and transportation expenses.
