IMSS faces scrutiny over medical care and service delays

The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) is facing scrutiny regarding service quality and patient care across several regions. In Monclova, patients have filed a formal complaint with the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) following a mass cataract surgery event. One patient, Domitilo Bernal Escobedo, reported losing approximately 80 percent of his vision in one eye and claims he has yet to receive corrective surgery or a medical solution despite being referred between various departments.

In San Luis Potosí, legislative officials have noted a rise in legal injunctions (amparos) filed by beneficiaries seeking medical attention. Reports indicate 139 cases related to omissions in services such as consultations, diagnoses, medications, and surgeries. Frinné Azuara Yarzábal, president of the State Congress Health Commission, criticized the lack of resources and urged the institution to improve response times to prevent patients from needing legal action to receive constitutional health protections.

Separately, IMSS in Hidalgo has issued public health recommendations for the rainy season, advising citizens to strengthen their immune systems through diets rich in vitamins C and D, zinc, and Omega-3 fatty acids to maintain natural defenses.
