IMSS investigates newborn deaths in Durango and Jalisco

Multiple investigations are underway following the deaths of several newborns at IMSS hospitals in Durango and Jalisco, Mexico. In Durango, five infants died at the Hospital General de Zona No. 1, with four cases testing positive for the bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae. In Jalisco, three newborns died at the Centro Médico Nacional de Occidente, where Klebsiella pneumoniae and Candida albicans were also identified.

Families in Jalisco have filed a collective criminal complaint with the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR), alleging medical negligence and inadequate hospital hygiene protocols. In Durango, the deaths have caused increased anxiety among pregnant women, leading many to seek care at state-run facilities instead of IMSS hospitals.

Additionally, health officials in Mexicali reported that two newborns were mistakenly delivered to the wrong families at an IMSS hospital due to human error. While DNA tests confirmed the mix-up, the families are awaiting further confirmation. IMSS Director Zoé Robledo has confirmed that medical, legal, and epidemiological investigations are ongoing to determine the exact causes and whether the deaths in both states are linked to a single outbreak.
