IMSS investigates five newborn deaths in Durango hospital
The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) is conducting a clinical and epidemiological investigation following the deaths of five newborns at the Hospital General de Zona No. 1 in Durango. The deaths occurred between September 15 and September 19.
During surveillance, medical specialists identified a bacteria in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) that is sensitive to commonly available antibiotics. However, IMSS stated that the presence of this microorganism does not, based on current evidence, alone explain the deaths.
As containment measures, the hospital has implemented case isolation, restricted new admissions to the NICU, and conducted extensive cleaning and disinfection. Follow-up cultures reported as of September 20 have been negative, and no new suspicious patients have been identified.
Local health authorities, including Coprised, are participating in the investigation, which is also being supervised by IMSS officials from the central level. Families of the deceased have reportedly expressed concerns regarding transparency and the conditions of the facility.
