IMSS Querétaro performs first endoscopic mastectomy and reconstruction

The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Querétaro has successfully performed the first endoscopic double mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction within the institution. The procedure was conducted at the Hospital General Regional (HGR) No. 2 in El Marqués for a patient diagnosed with breast cancer.

Using a laparoscopic technique originally developed in Italy, the surgery allows surgeons to remove breast tissue and tumors through an endoscopic approach. This method enables the immediate placement of implants to restore shape and volume while preserving the skin and the areola-nipple complex. According to oncological surgeon Dr. Marco Antonio Ponce Arias, this technique is rarely used globally and offers benefits such as minimal scarring and reduced recovery times compared to conventional mastectomies.

The patient, identified as Angélica “N”, underwent the surgery in May 2026, following a diagnosis made in October 2025. The medical team completed the full cycle of detection, diagnosis, and surgical intervention within a seven-month period.
