IMSS Querétaro provides leave for parents of children with cancer

The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Querétaro has implemented 'Licencia 140 Bis,' a benefit allowing insured parents to take leave to care for children under 16 diagnosed with cancer. The leave justifies work absences and protects the employment relationship during critical treatment, hospitalization, or medical care periods.

Parents can receive up to 364 days of leave within a three-year period. While the leave can be granted to both parents, it must be taken alternately rather than simultaneously. Each individual leave period is capped at 28 days. To qualify for a subsidy equal to 60% of their last registered salary, the parent must have at least 30 weeks of contributions during the 12 months preceding the child's diagnosis.

Since 2019, IMSS in Querétaro has issued more than 950 such licenses. Applications and management, including updating bank details and consulting history, can be completed digitally via the IMSS Digital app or the institution's official website to minimize the need for in-person visits.
