IMSS reports diabetes and motorcycle accidents as top medical causes

Diabetes mellitus and motorcycle-related trauma have emerged as the primary reasons for medical attention within the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). According to Director General Zoé Robledo Aburto, family medicine consultations increased by 12 percent this year, rising from approximately 56.8 million in 2023 to nearly 65 million in 2026.

Diabetes accounts for roughly 20 percent of family medicine visits, with hypertension, trauma, and respiratory diseases following closely. In emergency departments, which recorded over 10 million attendances between January and July 2026, road accidents—specifically those involving motorcycles—represent the most frequent type of trauma. Robledo Aburto has called for a reinforcement of road safety culture to mitigate these incidents.

Additionally, the IMSS plans to utilize electronic clinical records to digitize the scheduling of specialty consultations. This initiative aims to identify and correct long wait times for appointments through improved digital management.
