IMSS treats 250,000 elderly patients annually for fall injuries
The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) reports that more than 250,000 elderly individuals are treated annually in traumatology and orthopedics services for injuries resulting from falls. Approximately 10,000 of these patients require surgery for hip fractures each year.
Dr. Milagros Victoria Rodríguez Meza, a rehabilitation specialist in Mexico City, noted that at least 60 percent of people between the ages of 60 and 65 experience a fall annually. Common injuries include hip fractures, traumatic brain injuries, vertebral, radius, humerus, and pelvis fractures, as well as lacerations and ligament injuries. These incidents are often linked to low-impact falls and conditions such as osteoporosis, sarcopenia, loss of reflexes, and loss of balance.
Statistics show that 80 percent of these accidents occur within the home, particularly in bathrooms, bedrooms, hallways, and stairs. Public spaces and public transportation also pose risks. Experts recommend assessing risks, performing exercises to improve strength and balance, addressing muscle loss, and managing visual or auditory impairments. The use of canes, walkers, or orthotics is also suggested.
