IMSS Veracruz issues warning over mosquito-borne diseases

The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Veracruz Norte has issued a public health warning to increase preventive measures against dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya. These viral diseases are transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is characterized by its black color with white stripes and is most active during the day.

Due to the rainy season, the risk of mosquito breeding has increased. Health officials recommend inspecting homes, patios, and rooftops to eliminate standing water in containers such as tires, buckets, flower vases, and uncovered water tanks. To prevent bites, the IMSS suggests installing mosquito nets on doors and windows, using repellent, and wearing long-sleeved clothing.

Perla Yadhira González Andalón, auxiliary coordinator of epidemiological surveillance, noted that while the diseases share a vector, their symptoms differ. Dengue typically involves sudden high fever and intense headache; Zika is characterized by mild fever, rashes, and red eyes; and Chikungunya is distinguished by severe, debilitating joint pain in the hands, wrists, ankles, and knees.
