INABIE suspends suppliers and faces corruption allegations in school lunch tenders

The National Institute of Student Welfare (INABIE) has suspended 14 suppliers of school breakfasts and lunches following the detection of technical irregularities. These findings emerged during inspections related to the 2026-2027 and 2027-2028 school years. Reported issues include dismantled kitchens, insufficient production capacity, non-compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices, and inconsistencies in declared infrastructure.

Simultaneously, new allegations have surfaced regarding school lunch tenders in San Pedro de Macorís, valued at over RD$1,900 million. Attorney Pedro Lara, representing 11 affected participants, claims that 15 companies were awarded contracts totaling more than RD$445 million despite being previously disqualified for failing to meet requirements. One specific case involves Manuel Emilio Mejía Molina, who reportedly received a contract for over RD$31 million despite an INABIE evaluation indicating the submission of false documentation.
