Inactive bank accounts can lead to unexpected debt and fees

Inactive bank accounts can lead to unexpected financial consequences, as leaving a balance at zero does not automatically close the account. Because the underlying contract remains active, financial institutions may continue to apply maintenance fees and service charges.

In Spain, the Banco de España has warned that these accumulated fees can turn a zero-balance account into a negative balance. This debt can accrue late payment interest and eventually result in formal debt claims. To avoid these costs, consumers are advised to formally request account cancellation rather than simply ceasing use.

Furthermore, users should be aware that canceling a specific account does not automatically terminate associated products, such as linked insurance policies, credit lines, or pension plans, which operate under independent contracts.
