INAGRO seeks to scale agricultural incubation model in Mozambique
The National Forest Incubation Programme (INAGRO) aims to scale its agricultural training model across Mozambique to foster youth entrepreneurship. Presented at the Go to Market Mozambique Agri-Food Forum in Maputo, the initiative seeks to train young people within established commercial farming operations to help them launch independent businesses.
The current model, which has operated for four years in Nhamatanda, Sofala province, involves a 12-month period where participants manage their own plots within a commercial farm. This allows them to learn cultivation, cost monitoring, and sales while gaining access to the broader value chain. By using an anchor company to provide resources, the program addresses common barriers such as lack of access to water, inputs, transport, and financing.
This push for domestic agricultural growth comes as Mozambique spent over one billion dollars importing rice, wheat, and cooking oil in 2025. Officials at the forum suggested that cooperation with Portugal could further strengthen productive capacity through technology transfer and investment.
