INALUM seeks green energy for Kuala Tanjung smelter by 2029
PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (INALUM) aims to utilize hydroelectric power from the Asahan 1 and Asahan 3 plants to meet the energy needs of its Kuala Tanjung smelter in North Sumatra by 2029. This initiative is designed to ensure the production of aluminum using green energy, as requirements for green certification necessitate a direct supply from renewable sources without mixing with other energy types from the grid.
However, diverting power from these plants could reduce the electricity supply for the North Sumatra electrical system. To mitigate this, INALUM requires replacement power from South Sumatra, which is currently dependent on the completion of a 500 kilovolt (kV) transmission network connecting the two regions.
