Inami wood carving and Zuisen-ji Temple highlight Toyama heritage
Inami, a town in Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, is recognized as a Japan Heritage site for its traditional wood carving. The Zuisen-ji Temple, known as the Inami Betsuin Zuisen-ji, serves as a major center for this craft. The temple features elaborate carvings created by local artisans, most notably in the Taishido building, where traditional techniques involve using 200 chisels to finish a single piece of wood.
In response to regional challenges such as population decline and an aging society, local initiatives are repurposing vacant houses. One such project has transformed an abandoned home in the former Inami district into a quiche shop, contributing to local revitalization efforts.
