INBIONATEC researchers use Raman spectroscopy to authenticate international art

The Institute of Bionanotechnology of the NOA (INBIONATEC), a joint entity of the National University of Santiago del Estero (UNSE) and CONICET, is utilizing advanced technology to assist in the scientific authentication of high-value artworks from international private collections.

International art specialist and curator Dr. Mariana Turchio collaborated with institute researchers in Santiago del Estero to analyze pigments in various paintings. The authentication process utilizes Raman spectroscopy, a high-complexity system involving a high-performance confocal microscope. This technology allows researchers to identify materials based on their molecular composition, effectively creating a ‘digital fingerprint’ of the materials to certify the authenticity of specific components.
