Inca archaeological discoveries reveal advanced ventilation and ritual paths in Peru

Archaeological discoveries in Peru are providing new insights into Inca engineering and ritual practices. In the Condebamba Valley, excavations at the Wancasanga site have revealed 12 circular structures that researchers believe functioned as ‘colcas’, or storage spaces used for resource administration during the Inca Empire.

Notably, archaeologists identified a specific structure equipped with two thermal ducts made of carved stone blocks and large slabs. This ventilation system, which allowed for constant air circulation, shares characteristics with storage facilities found along the Qhapaq Ñan (the Great Inca Road), suggesting advanced techniques for food preservation.

In the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park, specialists from the Cusco Culture Directorate and the University of Warsaw utilized LiDAR technology to identify 2.5 kilometers of an ancient Inca path within the Mandor wall sector. Unlike conventional defensive walls, this elevated structure follows the natural terrain and is oriented toward Yanantin, a sacred mountain.

Researchers suggest the path likely served a ritual purpose rather than a military one, as its layout aligns with Andean ceremonial practices and the sacred geography of the surrounding mountains.
