Incheon authorities crack down on illegal accommodations near airport

Incheon Special Judicial Police have identified eight illegal accommodation businesses operating in officetels near Incheon International Airport. The crackdown, conducted between October 6 and 15, targeted unregistered businesses using online sharing platforms to bypass regulations.

The operators reportedly disguised the officetels to look like standard guest rooms and utilized contactless methods—sending addresses and check-in instructions via text on the day of arrival—to evade detection. Because officetels are not subject to the same strict fire safety standards as official lodging facilities, authorities noted significant risks regarding fire safety and emergency preparedness.

The eight businesses have been booked for investigation on charges of violating the Public Health Control Act. Incheon plans to continue collaborative investigations with local districts to monitor high-density officetel areas and ensure a safe environment for visitors and citizens.
