Incheon shopping mall stabbing: 59-year-old suspect arrested

A 59-year-old man was arrested for attempted murder and possession of a weapon in a public place following a stabbing spree at a large commercial facility in Guwol-dong, Incheon, on October 13. The suspect, who was wearing an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet, reportedly used knives taped to both hands to attack people while moving between floors via an escalator.

The attack resulted in ten victims, eight of whom sustained injuries. One woman in her 20s suffered cardiac arrest and remains in critical condition in intensive care. Bystanders and shop employees managed to subdue the attacker using chairs before police arrived.

Investigations revealed the suspect had a prior criminal record for attempted murder in 2015 and was under probation until 2029. Notably, the suspect had met with a probation officer for lunch and received counseling shortly before the incident. The suspect claimed the attack was intended to draw attention to his grievances regarding medical treatment he received at a local hospital.
