Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority head selection faces vetting concerns

The selection process for the head of the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority (IFEZA) is facing scrutiny regarding potential political appointments and the depth of candidate vetting. Out of eight applicants, five candidates have passed the initial document screening and are scheduled for interviews on August 25.

Concerns have been raised that the rapid timeline—with final selection results expected to be notified on August 26, just one day after interviews—may not allow sufficient time for thorough integrity and ethics checks. This is particularly sensitive given the high-level nature of the position, which manages major development projects and investment attraction in areas like Songdo, Yeongjong, and Cheongna.

Public attention is focused on whether candidates involved in past controversies, including a high-ranking official linked to the ‘Shanghai scandal’ and a former IFEZA commissioner previously dismissed following a bribery conviction, are among the five interviewees. Critics argue that the position requires a high-ranking official with significant administrative weight to negotiate with central government ministries and global corporations, expressing concern that a lower-ranking official from a central ministry might lack the necessary influence.
