Incheon transportation issues highlight elderly mobility and Yeongjong residents' concerns
Incheon is facing growing challenges regarding public transportation, specifically concerning elderly mobility and regional service adjustments. Research from the Incheon Institute reveals that as the population ages, elderly residents are increasingly restricted to short-distance travel within 5km of their homes. While younger seniors (65–74) require support for regional travel and social participation, those aged 75 and older rely heavily on local access to hospitals and welfare centers. Experts suggest implementing demand-responsive transport (DRT), circular buses, and improved pedestrian environments to reduce the physical and financial burden of travel for this demographic.
Simultaneously, the Yeongjong District Council has issued a statement demanding the reversal of recent bus route adjustments for the 205 and 206 lines. The Incheon Metropolitan Government redirected these routes from expressways to local roads to comply with standing restrictions, causing significant delays for residents and airport workers. With Yeongjong Sky City lacking a subway station and alternative transit like the Yeongjong Tram still pending, the council argues that the current bus routes are the community's only viable lifeline.
