Incheon International Airport becomes world's busiest international hub
Incheon International Airport in South Korea has become the world's busiest airport for international passengers, according to data from the Airports Council International. During the first half of 2026, the hub handled 38.39 million international travelers, surpassing London Heathrow, which recorded 37.8 million passengers in the same period.
This shift in global aviation rankings is attributed in part to geopolitical instability in the Middle East, specifically the conflict involving the United States and Iran. Travelers are increasingly avoiding traditional hubs like Dubai in favor of East Asian transit routes. Consequently, Incheon has seen an 18.1 percent increase in transit passengers, reaching 4.24 million, with a 63.2 percent surge in passengers traveling to Europe.
Incheon Airport Corporation's acting president, Kim Beom-ho, credited the achievement to government support and the hard work of airport staff. The airport, which currently connects 101 airlines to 183 cities, is undergoing an expansion project intended to increase its annual capacity to 106 million passengers.
