Incheon International Airport eviction dispute with human rights group

Human rights group Homeless Action is calling for the immediate withdrawal of eviction orders issued by the Incheon International Airport Corporation against individuals living at the airport. During a press conference at Incheon Airport Terminal 2, the group argued that homelessness is a result of the state and local governments failing in their responsibilities, rather than individual misconduct. They urged authorities to provide temporary protection and connect individuals to community support systems instead of merely displacing them to other locations.

The Incheon International Airport Corporation maintains that the measures are necessary to ensure smooth operations and passenger safety under the Airport Facilities Act. The corporation reported 24 complaints related to homeless individuals between January and July this year, citing issues such as long-term occupation of cafe and bench seating, loud shouting, and alcohol consumption.

In response to the situation, the corporation stated it is working with self-reliance agencies to provide guidance on temporary housing, employment, and basic livelihood security. Meanwhile, Homeless Action has also criticized Incheon City for failing to address gaps in the support system for street homeless populations, calling for more accessible policies such as supportive housing and emergency measures.
