Incheon lacks regulations for household medical needle disposal

Incheon lacks established protocols and regulations for the disposal of household hypodermic needles, despite a surge in the use of injectable medications such as obesity treatments, insulin, and growth hormones. According to Representative Kim Kyo-heung, none of the 11 districts in Incheon have implemented ordinances, guidance, or dedicated collection bins for domestic needle waste.

Incidents of needle-stick injuries have already been reported during municipal waste collection in Michuhol-gu and Ganghwa-gun. While countries like the UK provide specialized disposal containers with prescriptions and Japan utilizes pharmacies for collection, Incheon currently lacks dedicated collection points at pharmacies or public health centers, leaving residents without clear instructions on safe disposal.
