Incheon Police Chief prepares for criminal procedure reforms

Yoo Seung-ryeol, Chief of the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency, announced that the police are prepared for the upcoming implementation of the revised Criminal Procedure Act. Addressing concerns regarding the abolition of the Prosecution Service and the launch of the Prosecution Service and the Serious Crime Investigation Agency, Yoo stated that the police have taken measures to prevent investigative delays or confusion.

To manage the expected increase in supplementary investigation requests, the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency has established a new Investigation Deliberation Division and reinforced its investigative workforce by 130 personnel. This includes 116 officers assigned to local police stations and 14 to the metropolitan agency. The police aim to improve the completeness of investigations to minimize back-and-forth with prosecutors.

Regarding specific regional cases, Yoo noted that the investigation into the Coupang logistics center fire in Seongnam-dong is expected to conclude in October. Additionally, the investigation into allegations of preferential employment involving a professor at Incheon National University is projected to reach a conclusion within the year.
