Incheon to introduce AI-based autonomous buses by 2027
Incheon Metropolitan City has announced plans to introduce AI-based autonomous driving public transportation services starting in 2027. The initiative includes deploying late-night autonomous buses on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route between Cheongna and Gangseo, covering a 23.8km stretch.
The city plans to invest 5 billion KRW through 2030 to gradually introduce autonomous buses, starting with one unit in 2027 and adding one more each year. The project aims to improve mobility during late-night hours and in areas with limited public transport access. The 18.3km section from Cheongna International Business Complex to the Bucheon Gogang Underpass will utilize dedicated central lanes to enhance safety.
Additionally, the city will allocate 5.2 billion KRW between 2027 and 2030 for autonomous shuttles in designated pilot zones. In Yeongjong, shuttles will operate on a 9.7km route between Haneul City and Unseo Station to assist commuters. In Songdo, a 3.7km shuttle service will connect Central Park with MICE facilities, hotels, and major tourist spots to improve visitor mobility.
