Incheon to pilot stone scale clam aquaculture starting 2027
Incheon Metropolitan City has been selected by the National Institute of Fisheries Science to lead a new research and training fishery project focused on the pilot cultivation of stone scale clams. The project, scheduled to run for two years from January 2027 to December 2028, involves an investment of approximately 68 million KRW.
The initiative aims to identify new shellfish species suitable for the Incheon region to combat the challenges posed by climate change and rising coastal water temperatures, which have caused significant die-offs in traditional species like manila clams and razor clams.
By focusing on the stone scale clam—a species noted for its high adaptability and marketability—the city seeks to diversify aquaculture products, reduce reliance on imports, and provide new income streams for local fishermen and fishing communities.
