INCIBE reports surge in AI-driven cyberattacks

Félix Barrio, Director General of INCIBE, reported a significant surge in digital crime, stating that cyberattacks in the first six months of the year have already surpassed the total for 2025. Barrio noted that approximately 80% of these cyberattacks are now driven by artificial intelligence.

Barrio emphasized the need to view AI both as a threat and a security tool, urging investment in technical competencies to ensure regional competitiveness. He highlighted the importance of making cybersecurity accessible to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and younger generations to navigate the ongoing industrial revolution.

In a related development, INCIBE has presented the Spanish team for the European Cybersecurity Challenge 2026. The group consists of 15 young specialists aged 18 to 25 who were selected through a technical 'Capture The Flag' competition. A final squad of ten starters and five substitutes will represent Spain in Bochum, Germany, this October.
