Inclusive education initiatives expand support for students with disabilities in Vietnam

Educational initiatives in Vietnam are focusing on expanding inclusive education for children with disabilities. At Xa Dan Secondary School in Hanoi, the 2026-2027 school year began with nearly 350 students, 251 of whom have disabilities. The school utilizes a model where hearing-impaired students learn alongside their non-disabled peers, while students with intellectual disabilities are placed in specialized classes tailored to their abilities.

Teachers at Xa Dan play multifaceted roles, acting as caregivers and companions. For first-grade students who have not yet developed spoken language, educators may spend an entire year teaching sign language to facilitate basic communication and emotional expression.

In Ninh Binh, efforts to improve inclusive education include raising community awareness and developing individualized education plans. Statistics show that out of 442 registered children with disabilities in the region, 399 are capable of participating in inclusive learning. To support this, the Ninh Binh education sector organized 21 training sessions for over 9,400 managers and teachers during the 2025-2026 school year. Additionally, digital technology and artificial intelligence are being integrated to help teachers create diverse learning materials and meet the specific needs of students with varying physical and cognitive challenges.
