Halloween celebrations focus on inclusivity and community events

As Halloween approaches, various communities and organizations are implementing initiatives to ensure the holiday is accessible and safe for everyone, particularly neurodivergent children and those with disabilities.

In Victoria, the Treat Accessibly initiative is expanding, providing lawn signs to help families of children with special needs identify homes that offer candy at the end of driveways to avoid sensory overload or physical barriers. Similarly, Intercare Therapy in Signal Hill is hosting a sensory-friendly treat trail designed to provide a safe space for children with autism to celebrate without the pressure of traditional social expectations.

Community-led events are also providing alternative festive options. Sioux Falls is hosting a faith-based Trunk and Treat at Zion Lutheran Church, while Canyon Lake is organizing multiple fall festivals and trunk-or-treat events to provide safe, local celebrations for families.

Safety experts also advise caution regarding seasonal hazards, such as the risks associated with unprescribed novelty contact lenses and fireworks, which can lead to serious eye injuries.
