Income Tax Department reports over 70 million returns filed

The Income Tax Department has announced that over 70 million income tax returns (ITR) have been filed for the assessment year 2026-27.

The department has issued an appeal to taxpayers with business or professional income who are not subject to a tax audit to file their returns before the upcoming deadline of August 31, 2026. Officials advised against waiting until the last minute to avoid potential technical issues and high traffic on the filing portal.

Previously, by the July 31 deadline, more than 59 million returns had been submitted by salaried individuals, pensioners, and other taxpayers not requiring an audit. The recent increase to over 70 million filings reflects continued participation from business and professional income earners.
