INCOR performs first high-complexity cardiac surgery on low-weight infant in Peru
Medical teams at the Instituto Nacional Cardiovascular (INCOR), part of EsSalud, have successfully performed a high-complexity hybrid cardiac procedure on a premature infant in Peru. The baby, born at 29 weeks of gestation and weighing only 1,600 grams, was diagnosed with coarctation of the aorta, a congenital malformation that narrows the body's main artery and risks severe heart failure.
The multidisciplinary team, including cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, intensivists, neonatologists, and anesthesiologists, utilized a combined approach. Surgeons accessed the carotid artery in the neck, allowing pediatric interventional cardiologists to introduce a catheter with a metallic stent to dilate the narrowed segment of the aorta and restore normal blood flow.
This marks the first time such a procedure has been conducted in Peru on a newborn of such low weight. The patient has shown significant improvement in general condition and full cardiac function, and remains hospitalized for continued monitoring and weight gain.
