Increasing vehicle size and weight raises road safety concerns
Modern vehicles are experiencing a significant increase in weight and physical dimensions, a phenomenon referred to as ‘car spreading’. This trend is driven by several factors, including enhanced safety features such as high-strength steel structures, multiple airbags, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like radar and cameras. Additionally, increased consumer demand for comfort—including larger displays, electric seats, and improved acoustic insulation—and the shift toward larger SUV and crossover models have contributed to the growth.
Electrification also plays a major role, as lithium-ion batteries add substantial mass, requiring heavier tires, brakes, and suspensions.
A report by Transport & Environment highlights the consequences of these growing dimensions. In Europe, the average width of new cars rose from 170 cm in 2001 to 180.3 cm in early 2023. The report warns that larger, heavier vehicles increase the risk of death for pedestrians and cyclists. Specifically, it is estimated that by 2040, the number of children killed in road accidents due to vehicle size could increase by 40%. Furthermore, larger cars reduce available parking spaces and encroach on sidewalks and bike lanes.
