Indefinite strike begins at Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital in Nigeria

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Ondo State have ordered all health‑sector unions at the Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital (FUTATH) to start an indefinite strike at midnight on Sunday, 26 July 2026. The action follows the expiry of a seven‑day ultimatum to the hospital management over failure to implement a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on staff welfare.

The unions demand the immediate enrollment of all workers listed on the authenticated nominal roll into the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), an end to practices that force staff to renounce lawful union membership, and a halt to alleged intimidation and victimisation of union leaders. A peaceful picket is also planned for Monday, 27 July, to press for compliance with the MoU.
