Honduras extends tax and municipal amnesties until late 2026

The National Congress of Honduras has approved an extension of various tax and municipal amnesties until December 31, 2026. This measure aims to facilitate the regularization of pending obligations for citizens by providing exemptions from fines, surcharges, and interest.

The amnesty package covers tax, municipal, vehicle, and public service obligations, including those related to the Honduran Social Security Institute (IHSS), water, and electricity. The extension was proposed by Deputy Antonio Rivera Callejas, who noted that many citizens are waiting for their year-end bonuses to settle economic commitments.

In separate legal and security developments, the Congress also authorized the early distribution of 1,000 million lempiras in assets seized by the Office of Asset Administration (OABI). These funds will be distributed among several institutions, including the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Security, and the Public Ministry, even before final judicial sentences are issued, provided the funds can be restituted if ordered by a court.

Additionally, the Public Ministry reported 29 criminal filings during the Morazanic holiday in San Pedro Sula, with 19 cases specifically related to alleged drug trafficking in the form of retail distribution.
