Independent bookstores in France adapt to changing market
Independent bookstores in France are evolving their business models to survive the competition from online commerce. Owners are increasingly focusing on community engagement, hosting animations, and creating social hubs to foster local connections.
In Aveyron, the bookstore ‘Les mots à l’envers, les mots à l’endroit’ serves as a space for debate and knowledge sharing. Despite the challenges, the National Book Centre reported in 2025 that France saw 85 bookstore closures compared to 83 openings, with 57 takeovers. Most new openings are concentrated in small municipalities with fewer than 15,000 inhabitants.
In Périgueux, the Babel bookstore specializes in a curated selection of literature, sciences, and fine arts ranging from the 16th to the 20th century, alongside graphic arts and decorative objects. Owners emphasize the role of the bookseller as a ‘passer’ of culture, focusing on items that evoke emotion and providing a renewed life to unique objects.
