Independent bookstores in France face rising closures

Independent bookstores in the Paris metropolitan area are facing significant challenges, leading to a wave of closures. Data from the Centre national du livre (CNL) indicates a negative trend for 2025, with 83 new bookstores opening against 85 closures, marking an unprecedented net loss in the sector.

Industry professionals cite several contributing factors, including rising operating costs, competition from large online platforms like Amazon, the second-hand market, and the emergence of artificial intelligence. Booksellers also note a shift in consumer behavior, specifically an ‘effrayant’ (frightening) demand for immediacy and rapid delivery driven by e-commerce models.

Succession issues are also impacting the industry. Many retiring owners are unable to find successors to take over their businesses, forcing permanent closures of long-standing establishments.
