Independent Garages Association calls for MOT fee increase
The Independent Garages Association (IGA) is calling for the UK government to raise the MOT test fee cap to at least £95. The association argues that the current fee structure, which has remained frozen since 2010, is unsustainable due to rising costs in labor, fuel, energy, equipment, and staff training.
Stuart James, Chief Executive of the IGA, warned that the increasing cost burden could lead to consumer detriment. A survey of 4,500 IGA members indicated strong support for the increase, with some garages already reducing their MOT testing capacity to focus on more profitable services. The IGA suggests that if the fee is not adjusted, motorists may face reduced availability and fewer appointment options.
The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has also expressed support for a review, with CEO Nick Connor stating that a fee update is “urgently overdue” to keep pace with cumulative inflation and operational expenses. The IMI is planning an industry roundtable on October 21 to seek solutions that are fair to both garages and motorists.
