Independent truckers in Biobío protest rising fuel costs
Independent truck drivers in Chile’s Biobío Region held a demonstration on Route 160 to protest continuous increases in fuel prices and the inability to pass these costs on to cargo generators.
Participants, representing several small business and independent transport groups from areas including Coronel, Talcahuano, and Lirquén, organized a caravan toward Concepción. Spokespersons stated that rising fuel costs have depleted working capital, noting that operational expenses have effectively doubled for some.
Drivers also expressed dissatisfaction with low freight rates and delayed payments, alleging that while some companies have seen significant profits, these benefits have not been shared with transporters. While the current demonstration was intended to be a peaceful caravan, transport groups have not ruled out future strikes or intensified regional and national mobilizations if their grievances are not addressed.
