Independiente faces defensive crisis following player injuries

Independiente is facing significant squad depth challenges due to injuries to key defensive players. Leonardo Godoy, a right-back, has been diagnosed with a tear that is expected to sideline him for two to three weeks. Godoy has already missed one match and is expected to be unavailable for upcoming fixtures against Atlético Tucumán, Lanús, and Independiente Rivadavia.

In a more severe development, 21-year-old left-back Jonathan De Irastorza has suffered a torn cruciate ligament during training. This injury will sideline him for the remainder of the season. His absence leaves Facundo Zabala as the primary option for the left-back position.

The severity of De Irastorza’s injury allows the club to utilize an extra slot in the transfer market to sign a replacement. Club president Néstor Grindetti is in discussions with manager Gustavo Quinteros to determine whether to use this opportunity to address the left-back vacancy or to pursue other priorities, such as a central defender or a defensive midfielder.
