Independiente Santa Fe eliminates River Plate in Copa Sudamericana shootout
Independiente Santa Fe has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 Copa Sudamericana after eliminating River Plate in a dramatic penalty shootout. Following a 1-1 draw in the second leg at the Estadio Más Monumental, the series was decided by a marathon shootout where Santa Fe prevailed 8-7 after 22 total kicks.
Santa Fe goalkeeper Weimar Asprilla emerged as the hero of the night, making crucial saves and scoring the decisive penalty. Conversely, River Plate goalkeeper Santiago Beltrán, who had saved three penalties during the shootout, missed his own attempt. The elimination has triggered significant changes at River Plate, including the departure of manager Eduardo Coudet.
In the wake of the loss, River legend Ubaldo Fillol publicly defended the young goalkeeper Beltrán, stating, “I felt great sadness when you had to define things that should have been defined by the field players, we goalkeepers are here to save, not to take penalties.”
Santa Fe will now face Vasco da Gama in the quarterfinals. The defeat leaves River Plate as one of the few major Argentine clubs struggling in international competitions, with only three Argentine teams remaining in continental tournaments.
