INDH investigates water contamination in La Serena and Monte Patria

The Coquimbo branch of the National Institute of Human Rights (INDH) has formally requested information from five public agencies following reports of water contamination in La Serena and Monte Patria. Following weather systems in July and August, sanitary controls identified Escherichia coli in three water samples in La Serena and nitrate concentrations in Monte Patria that reportedly double the permitted regulatory limits.

The INDH has sent inquiries to the Seremi de Salud, the Superintendency of Sanitary Services, the Coquimbo Health Service, and the municipalities of La Serena and Monte Patria. The institute is seeking a chronology of results, details on mitigation measures, the status of sanitary proceedings, and data regarding hospitalizations or medical consultations for diarrheal diseases and hepatitis A since July.

Federico Aguirre, acting head of the Coquimbo office, stated that the human right to sufficient quality and quantity of water is a prerequisite for guaranteeing the rights to health and physical integrity. He emphasized the importance of timely information regarding sanitary controls and the measures taken to protect the population.
