India advances Agni-V missile technology and private defense partnerships
India is advancing its strategic deterrence capabilities through technological upgrades to the Agni-V ballistic missile and new initiatives to involve the private sector in defense production.
The Agni-V missile has undergone significant engineering improvements, including the transition from maraging steel to carbon composite casings using filament winding technology. This shift reduces weight, enhancing range and payload flexibility. The upgraded system is MIRV capable, allowing it to deploy three or more independently targetable re-entry vehicles. Additionally, the missile now utilizes electromechanical actuators for flex nozzle control, replacing heavier electro-hydraulic systems to improve reliability and precision.
To bolster domestic production, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is inviting private firms to partner in the production of missile and bomb systems. Under this model, selected companies will work alongside DRDO to develop prototypes before receiving large-scale production orders. Qualifying firms must possess industrial and PESO licenses, meet specific financial thresholds, and demonstrate expertise in bulk production. Established companies such as Tata Advanced Systems Ltd and Solar Aerospace and Defence are expected to be among those considered, alongside public sector entities like Bharat Dynamics Ltd.
