India notifies sixth indigenisation list for 405 defence items
India's Ministry of Defence has notified its sixth Positive Indigenisation List (PIL), identifying 405 strategically important items that will no longer be imported. The list includes line replaceable units, sub-systems, components, and raw materials, with an estimated business potential of ₹3,070 crore.
The items are divided between 16 components for the Indian Coast Guard and 389 for Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs). The scope covers various platforms, including air platforms like the Su-30MKI and Advanced Light Helicopter, armoured platforms such as the T-72 and T-90, and missile systems like MRSAM. It also includes defence electronics, such as radars and sonar, and high-explosive anti-tank ammunition.
This initiative is part of the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision to reduce import dependence and bolster domestic manufacturing. Successful indigenisation will lead to procurement from Indian industries, including MSMEs and startups. Since the launch of the SRIJAN Defence Portal in 2020, India has successfully developed over 15,700 items, resulting in ₹9,000 crore in import substitution.
