India agriculture: Maize farming opportunities amid Maharashtra drought

Agricultural conditions in India are seeing a sharp contrast between emerging commercial opportunities and severe climate-driven distress. In regions like Azamgarh, farmers are increasingly turning to scientific maize cultivation to boost income. High market demand for varieties such as sweet corn and baby corn, driven by use in restaurants and weddings, has seen prices reach approximately 80 to 90 rupees per kilogram.

Conversely, parts of Maharashtra are facing a significant drought crisis. In 20 districts, rainfall has been at least 20 percent below normal, with some areas experiencing dry spells exceeding 30 days. The Marathwada region is particularly hard hit, recording only 424.5 mm of rain against a seasonal average of 679.5 mm. Preliminary assessments suggest that at least 25 percent of standing crops in eight districts of Marathwada have been affected.

The drought has also sparked political scrutiny regarding government response. During review meetings intended to address the crisis, videos surfaced appearing to show officials consuming snacks like cashews and almonds or using mobile phones, leading to questions regarding the seriousness of the administration's approach to the farmers' plight.
