India AI talent demand surges as enterprises scale implementation

The demand for specialized artificial intelligence talent is surging in India as enterprises transition from experimentation to mainstream implementation. According to a report by CIEL HR, demand for Agentic AI engineers grew 260 per cent year-on-year in 2026. Other high-growth roles include GenAI solutions architects and AI product owners, which both saw 120 per cent increases.

Data from Naukri JobSpeak corroborates this trend, noting that AI/ML hiring rose 31 per cent year-on-year in August. Regional growth was particularly strong in Hyderabad, which recorded a 48 per cent increase in AI/ML recruitment, followed by Mumbai at 36 per cent.

Despite the hiring boom, industry experts highlight significant hurdles in enterprise adoption. Challenges include a gap between AI strategy and execution, particularly when global headquarters design programs without involving local delivery centers. Furthermore, many organizations face a bottleneck where data readiness, rather than model selection, becomes the primary constraint preventing successful transitions from pilot programs to full-scale production environments.
