India aims to end drug trade by 2029, Mizoram Governor announces

Mizoram Governor General (Dr) V. K. Singh (Retd) has launched the ‘State Action Plan to Combat Drug Menace 2026-2029’, supporting India’s national goal to end the drug trade by December 31, 2029.

The initiative follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’, which aims to prevent substance abuse among youth. The Governor emphasized the necessity of community participation and awareness to protect young people. He also recognized Tlangmawi as Mizoram’s first drug-free village.

Given Mizoram’s strategic location and its long international borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, the Governor highlighted the state's responsibility as a gatekeeper for the rest of the country. He called for continued vigilance and efforts from enforcement agencies and local committees to combat illicit trafficking.
