India aims to leverage genetic diversity for global research
At the Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC) 2026 in New Delhi, Union Minister Jitendra Singh highlighted India’s genetic and phenotypic diversity as a significant asset for global gene research. He noted that these diverse profiles could assist researchers in understanding disease patterns and developing new healthcare approaches.
To support this, Singh emphasized the necessity of developing indigenous gene-synthesis capabilities to reduce dependence on overseas suppliers and prevent research disruptions. He also called for increased industry participation, improved funding, and stronger collaboration between scientific institutions and businesses.
Additionally, the conclave concluded with the release of two policy documents: the National Vision Document for ESTIC 2026 and the India: Science, Technology and Innovation Outlook 2026. Singh stressed that India’s scientific progress should be measured by tangible outcomes, setting clear targets to support the ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision. Key emerging sectors identified include space medicine, nuclear medicine, ocean science, and the blue economy.
