India aims to raise tourism's share of GDP to 10% by 2047

Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat announced that the government will increase tourism’s contribution to the national economy from the current 6 percent to 10 percent by 2047. An interim target of 7 percent is set for 2030. Shekhawat said the rise in foreign arrivals and unprecedented growth in domestic tourism are driving the push, describing tourism as a key engine for decentralized development that creates jobs across transport, handicrafts, food‑beverage and local products. He linked the sector’s expansion to broader poverty‑reduction gains, noting that more than 250 million people have moved above the poverty line since 2014 thanks to economic growth and effective inflation management. The ministry is prioritising infrastructure upgrades and better tourist facilities nationwide to sustain the momentum.
