India and Bangladesh address security and bilateral cooperation

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has stated that the current situation in Bangladesh has direct implications for the security of Northeast India. In a report presented to a Parliamentary Committee on External Affairs, the government highlighted a comprehensive approach to managing cross-border challenges, including illegal migration, smuggling, drug trafficking, and extremist infiltration.

Since December 2024, joint operations in Assam have led to the arrest of 14 terrorists affiliated with the Ansarullah Bangla Team. Heightened security has also resulted in the seizure of 12,300 kg of narcotics and the detention of several Bangladeshi nationals. The committee, led by Shashi Tharoor, emphasized that the stability and economic development of the Northeast are closely linked to effective border management.

Parallel to security concerns, diplomatic efforts are underway to strengthen bilateral ties. Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi met with Bangladeshi officials in Dhaka to discuss advancing people-to-people cooperation and economic partnerships. Discussions also focused on deepening connections between business communities and professionals, as well as environmental cooperation regarding mangrove conservation and transboundary monitoring in the Sundarbans.
